Sydney marine life

Eastern blue devil

Deep blue with white spots and yellow-orange bands, the eastern blue devil is one of the most striking fish on Sydney’s reefs. It lives in caves and crevices and rarely strays far from its home.

What to look for

A flash of electric blue at the back of a cave or ledge. Bring a torch and shine it gently into the overhangs. Blue devils are territorial and often live in the same crevice for years.

Seeing them responsibly

Blue devils are protected in NSW. Don’t reach into their cave, and keep the torch beam off their eyes for long periods.
