Yellowtail kingfish

Yellowtail kingfish are powerful, fast-swimming fish with a bright yellow tail. Schools often sweep in from the blue on Sydney’s deeper reefs to circle divers.

What to look for

A silver-green torpedo shape with a yellow stripe along the side and a yellow tail, usually in mid-water off the edge of the reef. Look up and out, not just down at the reef.

Diving with them

Kingfish are curious and often come to investigate bubbles. Stay still and let them come to you; chasing them sends the school away.
