Sydney marine life

Grey nurse shark

Rows of ragged teeth give the grey nurse shark a fearsome look, but it’s a slow, placid shark that divers can watch up close. The east coast population is critically endangered, and Sydney has some of the sites where they gather.

What to look for

Groups of sharks hovering almost motionless in gutters, caves and along rocky walls, usually in 15 to 25 metres. Grey nurse sharks swallow air at the surface to stay neutrally buoyant, which is why they can hang so still in the water.

Diving with them

Grey nurse sharks are protected in NSW, and there’s a code of conduct for diving with them. Don’t touch, feed or chase them, don’t block the entrance to a cave or gutter, and let them swim past you rather than swimming at them. Stay low and calm and they’ll often come close.
