Sydney marine life

Dusky whaler

Juvenile dusky whalers, around a metre long, use the sheltered water of Cabbage Tree Bay in Manly as a nursery. Seeing them glide past is one of the thrills of diving Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower.

What to look for

A sleek grey shark with a pale belly, cruising over the sand and around the reef edge, often in small groups. They’re shy and usually keep their distance.

Diving with them

These are young sharks in a protected aquatic reserve. Stay calm, keep still and let them pass. Chasing them only pushes them away.
