Dive Sites

Amed

Depth: Rating:

Amed is located on the north east coast of Bali, about 2.5 hours drive from Kuta. But if you stay overnight at Tulamben, it will take approximately 20 Minutes drive to the south of Tulamben. From a landscape point of view, Amed is much prettier than Tulamben. You will see many rice fields along the way, traditional salt-panning and also sandy beaches as apposed to Tulamben's stony ones. This reef discovered as a dive site in 1984 is in a quiet bay and the reef was extremely healthy. A site with such a variety of hard corals, magnificent barrel sponges and gorgonian fans, and it could serve as a kind of museum of scleractinian coral diversity. However in April - May 1998, Amed was badly affected by coral bleaching as a result of El - Nino, harder than anywhere else on the island, and effected the reef within the bay down to a depth 12 meters. The reef is slowly recovering, but we cannot yet tell when and if it would ever return to its original splendour. The deeper section fared better. The gorgonian and coral on the outer reef below 12 meters were never effected and are still healthy and worth the dive to see. There are two dive sites outside Jumeluk bay, Amed Reef and Amed Wall and both of which can be done as a shore or boat dive. The boat is a traditional fishing boat ( Jukung ) which is a small outrigger with the max capacity of 3 divers. Jumeluk bay is suitable both for novice and experienced divers. The condition is easy, very rarely any wave action at the surface and the visibility is usually 15 to 30m. LOCATION North-eastern Bali, a quiet fishing village, approximately 2 hours from Kuta/Legian or 20 minutes from Tulamben TYPE OF DIVES Shore diving and Boat diving VISIBILITY 15-25 meters DEPTHS 3 - 40 meters (ave. 18 meters) CURRENT Zero to mild currents SUITABILITY Suitable for all divers, from novice to experienced CONDITION Small local jukungs hold 2-3 divers and a boatman; be aware of small boat procedures (i.e., donning and removing equipment in deep water), black sand beach sloping into the water, coral reefs and a wall. HIGHLIGHTS Excellent snorkeling. Density and variety of fish. Fantastic coral formations. Coral Reefs and Wall.

Menjangan

Depth: Rating:

Located on the northwest of Bali, was first famous for its deer (menjangan is Javanese word for “Deer”). When west Bali Park was declared in 1982, Menjangan Island was included as well and the Park Service controls entry and diving the island.

In 1978 Menjangan became Bali’s first internationally recognized diving location, with beautiful reef flat. Consequently in 1997 the extensive reef flat at the island suffered damage from crown of thorn starfish, and in 1998, coral bleaching as a result of El Nino.

But the walls, for which menjangan is most famous- are still in excellent condition.
Although it said, the best diving in Menjangan island is during the south east monsoon (about April to November). You can dive at here anytime of the year, choosing sites on the north or south of the island depending on the direction of the wind.

The visibility at Menjangan Island can, at times, be amazing, probably the best in Bali, especially in October and November with horizontal visibility of 50 meters +.
Current is very rare, even 1 knot of current is unusual around the island.
The most recommended dive site in the island are the Angker, Garden eel and pos II.

Nusa Penida

Depth: Rating:

Located18 Nm east of Sanur. You will get you to the island in approximately 30 minutes.

Nusa Penida offers some of best diving to be found anywhere. Most of the dive sites around Nusa Penida and its two small sister islands - Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan will be a drift dive and the current can reach more than 4 knots. Upwelling from the deep water south of Bali, keep the visibility in these areas clear, but can also form thermo clines with temperatures dropping down to 22 °.

Pelagic are the main attraction here and you have a good chance to see jacks, mackerel, tuna, turtle, and mantas. Sharks are common and big mantas are frequently sighted. Perhaps the most unusual pelagic visitor to Nusa Penida ( August - September ) is the unique mola-mola or oceanic sunfish, a mysterious large flattened fish with elongated dorsal and vertical fins and a lumpy growth instead of a tail fin.

LOCATION South East of Bali, approximately 18 Nm from Sanur and 30 minute by boat
TYPE OF DIVES Boat diving and Drift diving
VISIBILITY 15 – 40 meters
DEPTHS 6 – 40 meters
CURRENT mild to currents up to 4+ knots

Padang Bai

Depth: Rating:

Amuk Bay located along the south side of Bali's eastern point, it's about 6 km across with Padang Bai in the south and Candidasa in the north.
Blue Lagoon just north Padang Bay, Tapekong and Biaha offers some of the best diving in Bali and in fact, some of the best diving you will find anywhere.

Sharks are seen on almost every dive, molas are regularly spotted, the fish life is exceptionally rich, the coral is healthy and the water is crystal clear.

Regardless of condition, these dive sites with the exception of blue Lagoon, are amongst the most difficult and dangerous to dive in Bali. The swell and strong currents coming from Lombok strait create unpredictable water movements, and compound the problem around them. This is a place to be both careful and patient.

No need to be scared of these dive sites but they should be treated with caution and respect!

LOCATION North East Coast of Bali, approximately 1.5 hours drive from Kuta/Legian. Four sites accessed by boat from Padang Bai
TYPE OF DIVES Boat diving, reef diving, wall diving, drift diving.
VISIBILITY 15 – 30 meters
DEPTHS 10 – 40 meters (18m and above recommended)
CURRENT Zero at Blue Lagoon, but unpredictable and changes often at other sites.
SUITABILITY Preferably experienced divers only
CONDITION An easy dive site, gentle white sandy slope and excellent marine life at Blue Lagoon. Mimpang, Tepekong Biaha: weather plays a strong role in determining dive condition here, swells, big waves and currents can make this a tricky dive site, cold upwellings can bring water temperatures down to very chilly levels. But on other days it can be as calm as a mill pond.
HIGHLIGHTS Considerable amount of fish. Reef sharks and assorted Rays. Cuttlefish, leafscorpionfish, crocodilefish (Blue Lagoon); many big pelagics (Tepekong,Mimpang,Biaha)

Secret Bay

Depth: Rating:

Located approximately 3.5 hours drive from Kuta / legian in a small bay called Teluk Gilimanuk, adjacent to where the ferries from Java dock. The bay is about 2 km across, very shallow, most of it less than five meters deep and it also contains two small islands.

Gilimanuk bay is the only bay off the narrow Bali strait, where currents can reach 7 knots, which means that Gilimanuk bay acts as a catch tank for many larva fish and other plankton sweeping along between Java and Bali. This is the reason why this bay offers a number of rare jewels for the macro-photographer, including odd gobies, dragonets, nudibranches, seahorses, juvenile Batavia batfish, and many other organisms.

The best time to dive is on the incoming high tide, it doesn't matter if it's early or late in the day, as the bay will have filled with clear water, plankton, and many other organisms.

Night diving at secret bay is possible and truly a magnificent experience! You will see some unique creatures wandering for dinner, something you won't see on the day dive.

LOCATION North west tip of Bali approximately 3 hours drive from Kuta
TYPE OF DIVES Shore diving, macro photography
VISIBILITY 5-10 meters
DEPTHS 2 - 10 meters
CURRENT Zero
SUITABILITY Mainly for macro photographer
CONDITION Shallow dive site, no rich coral growths, limited weed and coral beds. Water can be cold and visibility can be very low, dark mud/sand bottom but fat and healthy fish.
HIGHLIGHTS Rare marine species, this dive site specially for macro photographers.

The South- Sanur/ Kuta/ Nusa Dua

Depth: Rating:
The south is the tourist center of Bali and many travelers spend their trip in the triangle area (Sanur - Kuta - Nusa Dua). The dive site stretches along the front of Sanur to Nusa Dua, with the depth range from 2 -14mtrs. If you don't enjoy driving for 4 hours to Menjangan or 3 hours to Tulamben then you can consider these dive sites as an option. The coral and fish life is not that exceptional compared to the other dive sites around Bali. But if you are a busy executive, or you might not have been in the water for 2 years, or you don't want to leave your family in the hotel for a whole day ... why don't you try these dive sites. After all, the diving is easy and relaxing, a bit of nitrogen in the blood, a bit time with the coral and fishes, why not??? It's not Bali's best reef but this is Bali Hai's best reef. LOCATION Sanur and Nusa Dua Tourist Beach, approximately 20 minutes from Kuta/Legian TYPE OF DIVES Boat diving, Reef diving VISIBILITY 5 – 10 meters DEPTHS 2 – 16 meters CURRENT Zero to mild currents SUITABILITY Suitable for all divers, from novice to experienced CONDITION Swells and big waves can make this a tricky site and visibility can be very low. HIGHLIGHTS Nusa Dua offer more Interesting coral formations than Sanur reef. Next Trip
