Pellowe Reef

Pellowe Reef is a small, isolated reef close to the edge of the continental shelf. Access depends on the weather, and when it allows, the diving is spectacular.

The dive

In places the reef drops away to 30 metres very quickly, which gives you an exciting wall dive. There are swim-throughs too. Most dives here are between 5 and 30 metres.

Being closer to the continental shelf raises the chance of large pelagic fish. Chevron barracuda and nudibranchs are more regular sightings.

Conditions and tips

  • Weather: access depends on the weather, and Pellowe is best visited on fine days.
  • Depth: the wall drops off fast. Watch your depth and stay within your certification.
  • Guiding: dives aren’t guided. The dive supervisor gives a full briefing before every dive.

How to dive Pellowe Reef

Pellowe is one of the reefs visited on the 3 day / 2 night liveaboard, when conditions allow. The skipper chooses the sites for the weather, tides and currents on the day. The trip has up to 11 dives, including 2 night dives, and snorkellers travel on the same boat.

If you haven’t dived in a while, do your first dive of the trip as an orientation dive with an instructor.
