Thetford Reef dive site, Outer reef, Cairns
Underwater footage is illustrative. Marine life varies by site, season and conditions.
The dive
Thetford’s coral bommies give you some exciting wall dives and plenty of swim-throughs. Our two favourite sites are Cathedral and Blue Lagoon.
The reef has lots of hard and soft corals, including boulder and plate corals, and an abundance of marine life. Look for giant clams, butterflyfish, damsels and angelfish.
Conditions and tips
- Weather: Thetford’s depth and exposure mean the boat visits in mild conditions.
- Depth: 5 to 30 metres. Plan your dive to your certification.
- Guiding: dives aren’t guided. The dive supervisor gives a full briefing before every dive.
How to dive Thetford Reef
You dive Thetford on the 3 day / 2 night liveaboard, when the weather suits. The trip has up to 11 dives, including 2 night dives. Snorkellers travel on the same boat and snorkel at every site the boat visits.
If you haven’t dived in a while, your first dive of the trip can be an orientation dive with an instructor. Travelling alone? The crew will arrange a buddy. You can also do your Advanced course on the same trip.
Thetford is also one of the options on the Silverswift day trip.
