The Scuttling of the H.M.A.S. Adelaide

On Wednesday, April 13th the H.M.A.S. Adelaide will be scuttled approximately 1.87km off the coast of Avoca Beach! This will inevitably turn into an immensely popular new dive site and PRO DIVE will be in the center of all the action. The NSW Land & Property Management Authority plans to turn this vessel into an artificial reef and also into a wreck diving attraction. Dive access holes will be cut into the ship near the water line so that the more adventurous divers can penetrate this magnificent ship.

The H.M.A.S. Adelaide was first launched on the 21st of June 1978 and she was subsequently commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on the 15th of November 1980. She served as the lead ship of the Adelaide class of guided missile frigates for the RAN until she was finally decommissioned in January of 2008. She received battle honors for her role in East Timor in 1999 and in the Persian Gulf from 2001-02.

The ship will be sunk in approximately 32 meters of water making it accessible only to experienced divers.  She will be sunk in an upright position and oriented to face ESE. This is a dive site that you will not want to miss.
