Sydney pygmy pipehorse

Only a few centimetres long and dressed to look like the algae it lives in, the Sydney pygmy pipehorse is a challenge to spot. Finding one is a highlight for any Sydney diver.

What to look for

A small brown, red or green shape with a curled tail, anchored in short algae on rocky reef. They don’t move much, and they match their background almost perfectly. Your guide knows where to look, so ask on the briefing.

Seeing them responsibly

Hover well off the bottom and keep still. Pipehorses are protected in NSW, and a careless fin kick can move them off their spot or damage the algae they live in.
