Reef dive · Agincourt Reef

Triggerfish City

An unusual site at the northern end of Agincourt Reef 1, with large porites boulders scattered over a sandy bottom. Large titan triggerfish frequent the area.

The dive

On the outer edge, the wall has gutters and caves over a rubble bottom. Schooling fish are the big draw: red bass can be so dense that little light reaches the bottom. Grey reef whalers and lemon sharks work the current.

On the inner reef, striped and oriental sweetlips hide in the clefts and caves. Look closely at the soft corals for pipefish, some of them rare. You’ll also see Moorish idols, clownfish, and large titan and redtooth triggerfish.

Conditions and tips

  • Dive type: usually a static dive. Weather permitting, it can be a drift from the outer edge into the inner reef.
  • Visibility: up to 30 metres on an incoming tide.
  • Triggerfish: in the titan triggerfish breeding season you may need to be wary of them.

How to dive it

You dive Agincourt Reef on a day trip from Port Douglas. Certified divers get up to three guided dives at three different sites, with a full briefing before each one. Sites are chosen on the day to suit the weather and tides, so we can’t promise a particular site.
