A garden reef among the pinnacles and patch reefs west of Agincourt Reef 4. It’s a favourite with dive instructors.

The dive

A narrow, current-prone gap splits the patch reef in two. Juvenile grey reef whaler sharks visit the gap, at times in large numbers, and manta rays turn up now and then.

You have two ways to dive it:

  • The coral gardens on the northern side, sheltered from the south-easterly winds. Branching staghorn and plate corals, small and medium reef fish, and mackerel and big schools of fusiliers in the current.
  • All the way round the patch reef. It takes a comfortable 40 to 50 minutes, with plenty of time for photos of the corals, the fish and, with luck, the sharks.

Conditions and tips

The maximum depth is about 16 metres, and visibility is 10 to 30 metres, averaging about 15 metres. Expect some current in the gap between the two halves of the reef.

How to dive it

You dive Agincourt Reef on a day trip from Port Douglas. Certified divers get up to three guided dives at three different sites, with a full briefing before each one. Sites are chosen on the day to suit the weather and tides, so we can’t promise a particular site.
