Course schedule

  1. Day 1From 5:00 pm

    Orientation and introductions. Pool session: initial skill observation and watermanship tests. A run-through of the International Scuba Certification system. All online training must be complete.

  2. Day 28:00 am – 4:00 pm

    Course structure, general standards and procedures, developing presentations, teaching scuba skills.

  3. Day 38:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Confined water skill briefs, debriefs, assessment and problem solving. Academic presentations 1 and 2.

  4. Day 48:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Confined water skill briefs, debriefs, assessment and problem solving. Academic presentations 3 and 4. Dive site plans and dive safety logs.

  5. Day 58:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Open water skill briefs, debriefs, assessment and problem solving. Rescue skills and procedures review. Academic presentations 5 and 6.

  6. Day 68:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Open water skill briefs, debriefs, assessment and problem solving. What to expect in the Instructor Examination, and developing your exam presentation.

  7. Day 77:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Instructor Examination. Come ready with your presentations and scuba equipment.

  8. Day 87:00 am – 5:00 pm

    Instructor Examination: in-water evaluation.

Bring a laptop and your dive equipment every day. The schedule may vary depending on numbers. Pool sessions are at Victoria Park Pool, near Broadway.

Requirements

Dive medical requiredYou need a dive medical for this course. Some conditions, like heart disease, asthma or epilepsy, may stop you diving.

Certification and experience

  • Certified Divemaster (ISO 24801-3).
  • More than 60 logged dives.
  • More than 40 hours’ total dive time.

Water skills

  • Swim 600 m (565 yd) without stopping, any stroke or combination, in a swimsuit with no swimming or buoyancy aids, within 20 minutes.
  • Snorkel 800 m (875 yd) without stopping, using only mask, snorkel and fins, within 20 minutes.
  • Tread water for 15 minutes in a swimsuit with no swimming or buoyancy aids. Your face and mouth stay out of the water, and your hands are out of the water for the final 3 minutes.
  • Tow an inert diver in full scuba equipment 150 m (164 yd) in 6 minutes, wearing full open circuit scuba equipment yourself.

Age

  • 18 or older.

Gear

  • Your own dive equipment. Tanks and weights are included.
  • A laptop.

Insurance

  • Dive insurance is required if you work as an instructor. It isn’t included.

Dive training starts with the standard recreational diver medical questionnaire, the same wherever you train. What it involves, and when you need a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

What can I teach once I qualify?

Once you pass the evaluation, you can plan and run scuba diver training courses and lead divers of all levels in open water, including rescue activities. You teach open circuit, no-decompression diving on air or nitrox to a maximum of 40 metres. With further training you can add Specialty Instructor certifications.

What do I need before I start?

You must be 18 or older and a certified Divemaster (ISO 24801-3), with more than 60 logged dives and more than 40 hours’ total dive time.

How long do I have to sit the Instructor Examination?

Within 12 months of completing the development programme.
