The dive
Rocky reef surrounds the island. It is about 6 metres deep at the northern end and slopes to around 18 metres at the southern end, with most of the dive at 12 to 14 metres. That makes it a good choice for newer divers, and depending on the current it can be done as a drift.
What lives here
The fish life has a more tropical feel than you might expect this far south. Look for shovelnose rays, spotted eagle rays, turtles, wobbegongs and grey nurse sharks, along with Queensland gropers, bream, yellowtail, kingfish and dusky flathead.
Grey nurse shark rules
Green Island is declared critical habitat for the grey nurse shark. Line fishing with bait is banned there; spearfishing is allowed. Divers must follow the national code of conduct: no night dives at critical habitat sites, don’t touch, feed, chase or block the sharks, keep groups to ten divers or fewer, and no scooters, horns or shark pods. Check the current rules with NSW DPI before you dive.
