The cave
Sheer cliffs drop to the seabed, and the cave runs about 12 metres back into the rock. Its roof starts at around 33 metres and the floor is at about 36 metres, so you are deep for the whole time you’re at the cave. Plan your gas and keep a close eye on your no-decompression time.
Look on the sand in front of the entrance: shed shark teeth are often found there.
Grey nurse sharks
Male and female grey nurse sharks cruise in and around the cave when they’re in residence . In summer, schools of yellowtail arrive to feed, and big kingfish follow them in. Panicked yellowtail sometimes dash into the cave for cover and run straight into the sharks.
Diving with grey nurse sharks
Grey nurse sharks are critically endangered on the east coast, and NSW has a code of conduct for divers. Don’t block cave or gutter entrances or trap the sharks, don’t touch, feed or chase them, and don’t get in the way of their swimming path. Heavy penalties apply. Check the current rules with NSW DPI before you dive.
