Day trip or expedition?

  • Day tripCalypso Star Charters, MV Calypso Star II. A long day: about 3 hours each way, with the rest at the Neptune Islands. The crew uses natural fish berley, under permit, to bring the sharks close to the boat and cage.
  • Liveaboard expeditionsRodney Fox Shark Expeditions runs the only liveaboard at the Neptune Islands, on the MV Rodney Fox. You get more time with the sharks, the ocean floor cage for certified scuba divers, sea lion snorkelling, fur seal trips in the tender, walks on the islands and evening shark research talks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a certified diver?

No, not for the surface cage. Only the ocean floor cage on the liveaboard expeditions needs scuba certification (Open Water or higher).

What if we don’t see any sharks?

Sightings can’t be guaranteed. Each operator’s terms set out what happens if no great whites are seen (neither gives a straight refund): see the terms and conditions.

What should I bring on the day trip?

Bathers and a towel, a camera and charging cables (USB points on board), warm clothes (a warm jacket is a must in winter), polarised sunglasses, sunscreen, soft-soled boat shoes, a small bag and a reusable drink bottle.

Can I also swim with sea lions?

Most expeditions stop to snorkel with Australian sea lions at Hopkins Island. For a day trip, see the shark and sea lion combo or swimming with sea lions.

Who runs these trips?

Calypso Star Charters runs the day trip, and Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions runs the liveaboards. Pro Dive sells the trips; there’s no Pro Dive shop in Port Lincoln.
