How the course works

  • The theoryRead the PADI Enriched Air (Nitrox) manual and answer the knowledge reviews. There’s plenty of free time to do this on the trip out to the reef.
  • Two training divesOnce you’re on the reef, tell the crew when you want to do your two training dives.
  • Dive on nitroxWhen you’ve finished the course you can dive on nitrox for your remaining dives on the trip.
  • Why nitrox on a liveaboardEnriched air is ideal when you’re doing multiple dives over multiple days, like on a three-day trip.

There’s a short written nitrox exam, done on board.

Requirements

Medical declarationIf you answer “yes” to any question on the Continuing Education Student Diver Medical Declaration, you need a dive medical certificate before the course. We recommend getting it before you arrive in Cairns.

Certification

  • Open Water certification or higher.
  • Bring your dive certification (physical or electronic). It must be shown at check-in.

Medical

  • Complete the medical questionnaire. A “yes” to any question means you need a doctor’s certificate before diving.

Rusty?

Dive training starts with the standard recreational diver medical questionnaire, the same wherever you train. What it involves, and when you need a doctor. Each trip operator’s own medical and waiver requirements are emailed with your booking confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a classroom session?

No. The course is some theory and two training dives, so it’s all done on board. You read the manual and answer the knowledge reviews on the trip out, then choose when to do your training dives.

Why learn nitrox on a liveaboard?

Enriched air is ideal when you’re doing multiple dives over multiple days. Once you’re certified you can dive on nitrox for the rest of the trip.

Want Advanced as well?

Do both on one trip with the Advanced + Nitrox course.

Can you cater for allergies?

Yes, including peanut and seafood allergies. No prepared meals include nuts, and there’s an alternative to the one sauce that contains seafood. Tell the crew at check-in.

Are there power outlets in the cabins?

Yes, every cabin has a 240 V outlet.

Are there DIN adaptors on board?

Yes.

What hire gear is on board?

Full-foot fins, masks, BCDs, regulators with a compass and dive computer, 5 mm wetsuits, hoods in season and dive lights. There are a few open-heel fins if you bring your own boots; boots aren’t available to hire.
