The boat

Spirit of Freedom

A purpose-built, ocean-going liveaboard with stabilisers, large cabins that all have an ensuite, a spacious saloon for eating and relaxing, and a covered top deck. It’s air-conditioned inside, with a big sun deck and dive deck.

The service is like a hotel: chef-prepared meals, cabins serviced daily and hot towels after each dive. A dive tender is in the water on every dive, and an in-water dive supervisor is there on most dives. Bring your own gear or hire a full set.

Saturday night is at anchor in Watson’s Bay, Lizard Island, with a sunset barbecue dinner on the top deck.

  3. Day 4Sunday · Lizard Island

After breakfast, go ashore on Lizard Island to stretch your legs at the halfway point; we recommend the guided walk from Watson’s Beach to Mary Watson’s cottage, over Chinaman’s Ridge and back to the beach. Requirements

Divers complete a medical statement before the trip. It’s part of the diver information form you get when you book, due at least 30 days before departure. A “yes” to questions 2, 3 or 4 means you need a dive medical from a doctor, dated within the last 12 months. Everyone over 65 needs a dive medical. Get it before you arrive in Cairns. About dive medicals.

Divers

  • Advanced certification, with at least 20 ocean dives including 5 in the last 12 months (recommended). With less experience, your diving may be limited by the conditions and how remote the sites are.
  • Bring your certification card and a recent log book. Both are checked at check-in.
  • Dives aren’t guided: buddy teams plan and run their own dives.
  • Rusty? Consider a refresher course before the trip.

Snorkellers

  • Only the Ribbon Reefs part of this trip suits snorkellers: experienced ones with good fitness. The Coral Sea’s deeper reef tops and strong currents are for very experienced snorkellers and strong swimmers only. You may not snorkel at every site or have a snorkel buddy.

Age

  • The minimum age is 16 at departure. Under-18s must be with a parent when diving or snorkelling.

Language

  • Briefings are in English. Guests who don’t speak English need to travel with an interpreter, who pays the normal fare.

Each trip operator’s own medical and waiver requirements are emailed with your booking confirmation. About dive medicals.

Frequently asked questions

How experienced do I need to be?

The recommendation is Advanced certification with at least 20 ocean dives, including 5 in the last 12 months. The Coral Sea is remote and conditions can be demanding, so with less experience your diving may be limited.

Can I snorkel on this trip?

On the Ribbon Reefs, if you’re an experienced snorkeller with good fitness. The Coral Sea reefs suit only very experienced snorkellers and strong swimmers. You may need to snorkel alone and wear flotation, with a look-out crew member watching from the boat.

Can I dive on nitrox?

Yes, with your nitrox certification card. Fills are up to 32% and cost extra, and your regulator must be nitrox compatible.

What should I bring?

Toiletries, swimwear, a hat and a jumper in winter (May to September). Casual clothes by day, smart casual in the evening. No shoes are worn on board. If you’re not sure of your sea legs, bring motion-sickness tablets; Kwells and Travel Calm are fine when diving.

How is the diving run?

You and your buddy plan and dive your own dives, within safe diving practice, with no set limits on time, depth or style. Every dive starts with a detailed briefing, and the dive crew give surface support and keep a look-out from the deck. When they’re free, they may be in the water helping with photography and finding critters. It isn’t a fully guided service: safety divers look after less experienced divers and students, and buddy teams are welcome to follow those groups.

How many people are on board?

Up to 24 guests, with a crew of at least 11.

Do I need travel and dive insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended, including cover for flight delays, cancellations and lost luggage that could make you miss the boat. If bad weather makes the trip unsafe and it’s cancelled, there’s no refund, because it’s beyond the operator’s control, so choose a policy that covers weather, especially from November to May, when cyclones and strong winds can affect trips. Every guest should also have medical and evacuation cover for scuba diving; not every travel policy includes it, so check with your insurer. In an emergency, evacuation, vessel relocation and medical costs are yours to pay.

What equipment is included?

Tanks, weights and weight belts, plus safety gear: a surface marker buoy, a whistle and a Nautilus LifeLine marine GPS. Glow sticks and torches are provided for night dives. Mask, snorkel, boots and fins aren’t included: bring your own or hire them.

When is the best time to go?

The reef and the Coral Sea are good all year. In winter (May to August) the water is a little cooler, visibility is great and days are clear, though winds can be stronger, and it’s the season to swim with minke whales. From September to December the water warms, conditions are generally clear with light winds, and many reef species breed. January to April is the wetter season, with plenty of feeding action after the breeding season.
