Spoilsport medical declaration

Everyone booking a Mike Ball Dive Expeditions trip on MV Spoilsport answers a short medical declaration on the booking form. Here’s what it asks, and what your answers mean for your diving.

The questions

  1. Are you medically and physically fit to dive and snorkel?
  2. Have you ever had an illness or injury that could affect your ability to dive or snorkel safely?
  3. Do you have, or have you ever had, a heart or lung disorder, high blood pressure, asthma, epilepsy, narcolepsy, diabetes, or any other condition that rules out diving?
  4. Are you taking prescription medication (other than contraceptives)?
  5. Do you understand that if you don’t disclose a condition, or don’t provide a suitable medical, you’re limited to 2 supervised dives a day, with more only if staff are available?
  6. Do you understand that if you have a condition listed in question 3 and no medical, you can’t dive at all?

If you answer yes to questions 2, 3 or 4

You need a dive medical clearance from a doctor, dated within the last 12 months, that clearly covers every condition and medication. Tell us when you book, because dive restrictions may apply. Australian standards differ from some overseas ones, so get the medical before you arrive in Cairns. About dive medicals.

Without a medical

  • No medical for a condition in question 3: no diving.
  • A condition not disclosed, or no suitable medical: 2 supervised dives a day at most. Further dives depend on staff availability.

On the trip

Don’t dive if you feel unwell or have a chest cold or congestion. You also agree that the crew can arrange medical care or transport in your best interest, and that you pay any costs this incurs. Dive and medical evacuation insurance covers you for this.
