About the Wreck of the SS Yongala
The wreck of the steamer SS Yongala, which sank during a cyclone in March, 1911, is rated Australia's best wreck dive. At 120 metres in length, Yongala is also the longest and most intact wreck off the Australian coast.
Situated in 14-28 metres of water, lying on its port side, the wreck has turned into an amazing artificial reef attracting a huge amount of aquatic life.
On most days you can expect to see giant Queensland groupers, giant trevally, barracuda, sea snakes, turtles and sharks. There are also common sightings of bull and eagle rays plus schools of black kingfish. The hull is also adorned in a wide range of sponges and corals.
Situated perfectly, a 2 minute stroll to Nelly Bay beach and only a short walk from restaurants, supermarkets, bottle shop, bakery and other conveniences. This is sure to become a favorite holiday rental on Magnetic Island. For all it offers it is great value so book early to avoid disappointment.
